What a class looks like

An hour, in the same order every time.

Kids relax when they know what's coming. Every class follows this shape. Tiny Champions runs shorter.

  1. 1
    Bow in

Line up, bow, shake the instructor's hand. Kids call them Professor.

  2. 2
    Warm-up games

Running, rolling, animal walks. They don't notice it's exercise.

  3. 3
    Technique

One move, shown slowly, then practiced with a partner.

  4. 4
    Water break
  5. 5
    Technique two

A second move that builds on the first.

  6. 6
    Water break
  7. 7
    Live rounds

Controlled and supervised. The part they talk about in the car.

  8. 8
    A game, if time allows
  9. 9
    Bow out

Handshake, eye contact, “thank you, Professor.”

Questions parents ask

Safe and structured, from age 3.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is grappling: balance, leverage and control. Kids learn to stay calm and think, with an instructor on the mat the entire class.

Is it safe for a 3-year-old?

Yes. We start at age 3. Tiny Champions is built around games, balance and listening, an instructor is on the mat the whole time, and classes are kept small enough to see every kid.

What if my child is shy or won't participate?

They can sit on the edge of the mat and watch for as long as they need. Nobody gets pulled in. Most kids are on the mat by the end of class 1; the rest usually join by class 2. That's why the pass is three classes.

What if my child has never done a sport?

That's most of our younger students. At 3, 5 or 7, many kids have never been in an organized class where they're expected to listen and take part. For a lot of families, this is the first one. Class starts with games, not drills, and nobody is compared to anybody else.

Is it a good fit for a girl?

Yes. Girls train in every one of our kids classes, and technique beats size in jiu-jitsu. That's the whole point of it.

What if we can't fit three classes into ten days?

Tell us and we'll issue a second 3-class pass. The ten days are there so the classes are close enough together to build on each other, not to rush you.

What do they wear to the first class?

Shorts and a T-shirt. We lend them a gi (the uniform) for free for all three classes. Bring a water bottle.

Do I stay and watch?

Please do. Parents watch every class from the benches along the mat. You'll see everything without being on the floor.

What happens after the three classes?

You decide. If your child wants to keep going, our program director walks you through enrollment. Kids memberships run $140 to $200 a month, no long-term contract, cancel anytime. If not, there's nothing to cancel. No contract and no card on file during the pass.
